Physical Description:
Belnel Urban Wild includes a thin strip of the south-facing bank of the Neponset River to the rear of homes situated along Belnel Road. This wild is protected by MA DCR as part of the Neponset River Reservation. A historic granite cobble wall, installed by the Works Progress Administration in 1938 and 1939, forms the northern boundary of the wild. Behind the wall the riverbank supports an urban forest of Red and Norway Maple, Northern Catalpa, and Black Locust with a weedy floor of Garlic Mustard, Japanese Knotweed, Poison Ivy, and Virginia Creeper. The bank of the river here is reinforced with granite blocks peppered with outfall culverts delivering storm water to the Neponset River with each rainfall. Dumping of yard waste is quite common within this wild, especially near Osceola Street.
