For three decades, Boston Natural Areas Network has been supported by the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations. This commitment to BNAN has resulted in the protection of more than 800-acres of urban wilds, the creation of two Greenway networks, and the protection and maintenance of 150 active community gardens, not to mention 30 years of advocacy and building stewardship throughout Boston and its neighborhoods.

Part-time Temporary Position Available
Community Mapping Coordinator

The Friends of the East Boston Greenway & Boston Natural Areas Network are seeking a Community Mapping Coordinator from October 2008 – January 2009. This position is part of the staffing for the East Boston Open Space Map project. This position will report to BNAN’s Program Manager.

    Responsibilities

  • Research and compile information regarding East Boston parks and open spaces
  • Create and manage database of park and open space data using Excel
  • Create park and open space survey
  • Train community volunteers how to utilize survey and conduct field work
  • Coordinate & supervise field work dates with volunteers
  • Verify locations mapped and resolve data discrepancies
  • Experience and Qualifications

  • Previous organizing or coordinating experience
  • Data collection and research experience, field work and/or social surveys
  • Enthusiasm and experience working with and training volunteers
  • Computer savvy, especially Internet, Excel & Word, GIS a plus
  • Strong and demonstrated organization skills
  • Good humor, responsible, mature and ability to work independently
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule and availability nights and weekends
  • High School degree required, some college training preferred
  • Familiarity with East Boston neighborhoods and parks preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred
  • Salary & Schedule

  • $15 per hour
  • Approximately 10 - 15 hours per week
  • Schedule determined by individual, may include evening and weekend hours to accommodate project needs
  • Beginning October 2008 through January 2009
