In 1995, Boston Natural Areas Network started the Greenways to Boston Harbor program - working with community residents and public officials to create the Neponset River and East Boston Greenways. These innovative effort undertaken with the voluntary citizen councils for each Greenway facilitate the development of a voluntary neighborhood strategy for preserving the scenic, natural, historic, cultural and recreational resources while encouraging compatible economic development and land use.
The Greenways traverse along remarkably diverse neighborhoods, opening up the network of open space, trails and recreation opportunities to Boston’s inner city population.
