What We Teach

City Natives is an outdoor classroom, offering hands-on training in all the skills that urban gardeners need to thrive. All BNAN events are free and open to the public.

How to Grow Food
Each year, hundreds of gardeners learn how to grow food at City Natives. City Natives is a living example of high-yield, sustainable food gardening practices. To share these practices, City Natives hosts the ever-popular Seed, Sow & Grow workshop series, a full season of participatory workshops on topics from seed starting to fruit tree maintenance and season extension. Interested in bringing a community group or youth program to City Natives for a tour? Please write erika@bostonnatural.org to arrange a visit.

Composting
City Natives demonstrates a range of urban composting techniques that keep green waste out of the landfill while pleasing your neighbors. We share our best practices and give gardeners the chance to get their hands dirty at composting workshops in the Seed, Sow & Grow workshop series. Want to kick-start composting in your community garden? Write erika@bostonnatural.org to set-up a compost workshop in your garden.

Wellness
Many of us come to the garden for healing. Each summer, City Natives hosts a series of classes on rotating topics including healthy cooking, herbal medicine, yoga and stress-reduction. City Natives is a vibrant setting for discovering the tools for healthy living. Interested in teaching an outdoor wellness workshop this season? Write to erika@bostonnatural.org.

Beekeeping
The City Natives Apiary includes a dozen bee hives and over sixty thousand honey bees. Local beekeepers Mike Graney and Brynmore Williams take care of the Apiary and help host a series of experiential workshops on hive setup, seasonal maintenance, honeybee biology and honey harvest. Workshops are held during the Spring Planting Festival & Perennial Divide and Harvest Festival & Perennial Divide.
