Description: Waverly Road Urban Wild includes a forested swamp and moist woodland adjacent to the entrance to the West Roxbury Crushed Stone, Company. Waverly Road is a paper street that was meant to enter the site from the west at Center Street and elbow north along the boundary with the quarry property. The street was never developed and a Red Maple swamp remains. The swamp and adjacent woodland are strongly impacted by the dust and noise pollution created by the quarry but form a buffer for the homes to the west.
Entering the Waverly Road Urban Wild can be difficult due to the impenetrable tangle of vegetation that has developed at its edges. Here Cat Briar, Bittersweet, and Multiflora Rose grow thickly yet yield to a more open sub canopy as you move towards the center of the property. The upland areas to the north support a hardwood forest of Red Oak, Black Cherry and Hickory species.
Current Use: Waverly Road Urban Wild remains unused by the public. The property serves as a buffer to the noise and dust produced by the quarry machinery to the east.
