Description: Souther Urban Wild includes an area of northern hardwood forest contiguous with the Brandegee Urban Wild and Allandale Woods to the west and south. The Souther property possesses the similar rolling topography of Brandegee UW, exhibiting scattered outcroppings of Roxbury Puddingstone. The same canopy of sugar maple, white oak, and shagbark hickory grows upon this wild with sassafras and sweet birch forming the under story in the richer areas to the south. Low bush blueberry and bracken fern are also quite prevalent on the southern facing slopes.
Current Use: Souther Urban Wild is used by the public and residents of the neighboring condominiums and homes for hiking, dog walking, and mountain biking. Many visitors to Allandale Woods will enter the property via a ridge walk at the back of a church property along Centre Street. An interpretive sign describing Allandale Woods, installed by the Parks Department in the 1990’s, stands here at the level of Centre Street.
